Kelly challenges Smithburg to charity boxing match. If he wins Smithburg has to surrender $10K –the amount of his family’s contribution to Mayor Rahm Emanuel
Chicago, Illinois, March 6, 2012 – William J. Kelly, Republican candidate for the 42nd ward, is challenging his opponent, Tommy Smithburg, to stop lying about his Republican voting record.
Despite evidence to the contrary, Smithburg issued a mailer Monday that falsely claimed Kelly voted straight Democrat; Kelly considers those fighting words. “It’s time to put up or shut up” says Kelly, who released his voting records over the weekend. To that end, Kelly says he will challenge Smithburg, 23, to a boxing match for charity at Sullivan’s Steakhouse at 6 p.m. on Tuesday night.
“If he wins, I will get out of the race. But if I win, he gives $10,000 to a charity of my choice. The same amount his family gave to Rahm Emanuel’s mayoral campaign while I was challenging Emanuel’s petitions in 2011.”
Kelly says that his offer is generous considering that Smithburg’s family has given tens of thousands of dollars to key Democrats like Barack Obama, Dick Durbin, and Dan Rostenkowski to name a few. He says that he will also accept a proxy if Smithburg, who is half his age, is afraid to fight.
“If he wants to pay to have someone else do his dirty work, he can have his campaign manager, David Walsh, fight as his proxy,” says Kelly. “I await his response.”
Back in November, Walsh threatened Kelly, telling him he would have to “move his family toNorth Dakota because every door inIllinoiswould be closed to them” if he didn’t get out of race.
